I just sent them a letter myself -- I tried sending it to the author
of the article but couldn't get it to go through, so I sent it to the
editor of the paper. Here's what I said:

********************************
Dear Editor,
I am one of a growing number of henna artists from across the world
that meets in an online forum (www.hennapage.com) to discuss various
recipes, methods and challenges involved in our art form. I was
delighted to see your article that put the spotlight on henna and the
dangers of PPD. I fear, however, the article may be misleading. One
might be led to believe that all henna "tattoos" put people at risk,
which is simply not the case. Pure henna paste combines ground henna
leaves with other natural ingredients (lime or lemon juice, tea,
sugar, or tamarind, to name just a few) to release the naturally-
occurring dye from the leaves to stain the skin. Variations of the
recipe have been used for several thousand years with very few
recorded incidents of ill effect. We feel it is important to
emphasize that the danger is found in the illegal chemical additive,
NOT in henna itself.

For more information about the dangers of PPD and "black henna,"
please visit the site created by one of our Forum members:
http://hometown.aol.com/jbesse6207/warnings.html

Thank you for spreading the word about the dangers of "bad" henna. It
is our utmost hope that you will be equally vigilant in allaying any
fears about "good" henna that may have arisen because of this article.

I hope I've represented the cause well... I guess we'll just have to
keep an eye on the Strait Times and see what develops.
