I've been delightfully suprised by the overall positive response from
my Christian friends, even those who don't like tattoos. Oddly enough,
the only questioning I got about its origin and purpose came from a
co-worker with NO religious affiliation. "So, isn't that stuff Hindu?"
he asked. "Isn't that a prayer or something? You're not Hindu..."
Since he was being honestly inquisitive and not antagonistic, I didn't
mind explaining. I told him that the history of the art form is much
broader than just India -- which is apparently where he received the
only other exposure he's had to it -- and that wearing henna doesn't
make me Hindu any more than having long hair makes me a Pentecostal.
It's just a type of adornment, like jewelry or makeup (only cooler...
but I decided not to go into that), that we use to express our
individuality.
"I guess," he sighed.

This from a guy with Dr. Seuss tattoos under his arms... sheesh.
