: sprinkle cement powder
Hmmm. That doesn't sound very appealing...and I'm not willing to buy
a large back of cement powder just to experiment with a tbl's worth!

The other possibility is ammonia crystals.
I thought that might be the likely culprit, from her description of
the artist creating a plaster, applying it over her designs and then
heating it over a charcoal brazier...but where would you get ammonia
crystals -- and would they be any nicer to the skin than household
ammonia? I tried the ammonia thing once -- it stripped most of the
design off my foot along with the skin, and left behind a horrible
greenish outline where the henna had been...I definitely don't want
to try that with anyone else!

Maybe I should start bottling
: the stuff and bringing it back with me! ;-)
You know, that might make an interesting experiment -- to test water
from various places. I know that the tap water in Austin was much
more acidic than the stuff here in San Diego. I was able to make
excellent stains with just henna powder and water last summer in
Austin. And I was also able to maintain happy tropical fish in
Austin water. Here in SD, the water is incredibly alkaline, and I
have to use distilled water for my fish...
