Over 60 countries, within many religions, for 9000 years!Posted by Catherine Cartwright Jones on August 5, 2001 at 17:20:15: In reply to: Who else used henna? posted by khoa on August 5, 2001 at 16:12:25: Henna was occasionally used up the western rim of the Pacific, tradednorthward from its climate zone (Singapore, etc). It was briefly used in T'and Dynasty China when it was brought in by Persian traders and others dislocated by the spread of Islam in the 7th - 8th C. Other than that .... have a look at the link below: Few people know that henna has been used in over 60 countries, for over 9000 years, and within Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, animist groups, and many other religions. In only a few religions was it ever used as a part of religious practice. FOR nearly all of its history, henna has been a SOCIAL habit (like putting up a Christmas tree, or making up an Easter basket) NOT NOT NOT a sacred practice! (like going to mass or saying the rosery). IN fact, even the Spanish Inquisition relented on forbidding henna when Christian women argued that henna is NOT a religious practice of Islam or Judaism! Henna was worn by women to mass in Sicily in the 11th century! If your priest continues to be difficult, thwack him with a camphire stick. (See post below on Biblical henna.) He's clueless. Coptic Christians use henna. Armenian Christian s use henna. Arab Christians use henna. Maybe by the time I get the Encyclopedia of henna done ..... we can get back to wearing henna for Easter Sunday as evidence implies was done originally!
