Black henna reactions on African AmericansPosted by Maureen on August 9, 2001 at 23:35:13: Catherine, this one is probably for you. But anyone else with anyknowledge of this please reply. I was having chills reading the situation of the girl a few posts down. Hope she heeds good advice. But it brought up these thoughts and questions for me: The descriptions of the reactions on skin from BH usually described is blistering and redness or red splotches. The likelihood is that in African Americans the blistering would be the same and the raised areas would probably be more likely. But what does the scarring look like and what colors would the splotches and areas that were effected turn since people with darker skin will most like not have the reddish discoloration as a warning sign. I know that with tattooing with needles African Americans who get tattoos on certain body parts have a higher likelihood of scarring, blistering and hyperpigmentation...especially on but not limited to areas of the face...lips and eye brows. I am wondering if AAs would also be more likely to have permanent scarring as a result of reactions to BH. I also read an old post by Kenzie linked to information on another website that stated among other things that 10% of African Americans and (I think) people of Mediterranean heritage are at risk for more subtle and long-term damage from using even natural henna. Is there some thought or data supporting or disproving this? Maureen
