I thought I was- Terpineol has lots o' synonymsPosted by txilar on August 10, 2001 at 04:01:52: In reply to: Are you sure? posted by Faery Ring on August 10, 2001 at 00:37:52: The stuff I typed out was from a botanical database. My first reftho, was Terpineol: 'Synonyms: terpene alcohol Molecular formula: C10 H18 O CAS No: 8000-41-7' from [http://physchem.ox.ac.uk/MSDS/TE/terpineol.html] Here, tho, is a site [http://www.jtbaker.com/msds/t0364.htm] giving the MSDS on terpineol with the same CAS# as you have, and gives 3- cyclohexene-1-methanol as yet another synonym. And yet another site [http://gandalf.pp.orst.edu/msds/DATA%5C1118.htm] confirms CAS NO.: 08000-41-7. Though the OSHA site, gives terpineol the synonyms of 'a mixture of alpha, gamma and beta ~' Now, I confess, I'm a bit confused. One thing to remember tho, is these constituents DO change. Upon coming into contact with heat, light, other chemicals, molecules start jumping and twisting and things simply change. Anyhow, some of the MSD sheets list terpineol as a hazardous substance, AND most all of that info comes from studies done on rats. If one is against animal testing, thats just one more reason that an essential oil might be better. I think it's best stated as terpineol, like henna, has different grades, depending on its source. Like henna also, it needs (possibly) more than just itself to work best, not just to work. Henna with water will stain, but a time lapse mix with an acidic substance will bring out the best stain. Specific things do specific things, but synergy is never an option to overlook. Especially in the chemical world. Is the scent of rose oil one key alcohol? Or is it the combination of each constituent? Synthetically created rose oil just is *not* the same. But it is one specific compound tinkered with one other just enough to create the same smell! Regardless, one should always go with the safest method that they prefer. : I have never found terpineol-just alpha-terpineol. Where did you get : that information? In all my searches I have never found information : on terpineol as being a precursor. All chemical references describe : it as being primarily alpha or some other isomer. Here is the CAS # : [98-55-5] 1-Methyl-4-Isopropyl-1-Cyclohexen-8-ol : : I don’t doubt that there may be other chemicals at may work to : improve the stain but I am not entirely convinced that ‘the sum is : greater then their individual parts’. I believe that there are : specific compounds with specific actions. But I’ll admit I have not : done much testing in this area. I am getting some terpineol isomers : to test and I will let you know what I find. I haven’t ordered from : The Good Scents Company yet. I appreciate being able to review their : fragrance database. It’s very interesting.
