I like to call it just "henna" or "henna body art." I don't like to
associate it with a tattoo, because then people get the impression
that it is something it's not. It is not permanent, nor does it come
in other colors, nor does it hurt or peirce the skin. I like to keep
it as simple as possible, so i don't scare people away.
That's my $.02
Maybe somebody else can add to this

: This is my first time to visit this web site, and I am surprised by
: the number of people on it! I have been "practicing mehndi" for
about
: a year now, I really enjoy it. My question is... what is the proper
: term for describing the art of the application of henna. Henna
: painting? And more, what should the end design be refered to as, I
: never feel like calling it a "henna tattoo" is correct. It is not a
: tattoo, that has a whole different history (and is more oriented
with
: males then females) then Mehndi. Not a big deal, but what should I
: call the lovely designs that I put on my hands, feet, legs, arm
