The best indicators for a good henna are smell and color. If you take
a whiff of the henna you have (the bad stuff) it should smell stale
and not very pungent. A good henna should smell like fresh hay or
leaves, and the smell should be very 'thick.' Not really a strong
smell, but a little potent and "green" smelling.
The color is also an indicator. If a henna is dull or grey, it is no
good. The best henna is often bright green.
Of course there are exceptions to all of these tips, so the best
thing to do is just experiment until you find one that's right for
you.
