Thanks for the words of wisdom, everybody. I got a really cool idea
this morning: I'm going to incorporate her "bleached" spots into her
designs!

When I was younger, she put makeup on her hands to conceal the spots.
But she was much more self-conscious then, and eager to gain the
approval of others. (I'm sure none of us have any idea what THAT'S
like... ;-P) Back then, it would have been dreadfully unkind to point
out something that caused her so much embarrassment. But these days
she's adopted a "love-me,love-my-idiosyncrasies" outlook. Her hair is
nearly half silver around her crown, and she's been dyeing it for the
last few years to cover it up. Well, a couple weeks ago she decided
she didn't want to dye it anymore, so she cut it... OFF. It's about
3/4 of an inch long now (and her natural color) and she loves it.

All that to say, she has gone from trying to mask her unique
characteristics to showcasing them, so I think the design will not
only be really cool, it will be a celebration of what makes her
uniquely my mom!

If I can get ahold of a digital camera tonight I'll take some pictures
and post them somewhere accessible. Here's hoping for some beautiful
henna on a beautiful woman...

Thanks again,
Sophie
