Dyeing other things than skin (hey, Alex!)

I want to make something special to wear when at events and I thoughtit would be nice to have a dress dyed with henna. However, when I've
test-dyed several different kinds of material (silk, linen, cotton,
wool), it all turns brown. How do I get the same results on fibers
as I do on my gloriously red hair? I don't get why the effect is so
different. Do I need a different sort of mordant than lemon juice?
Also, what method should I use, and what other additives/chemicals?
