First off, I admmire your willingness to try something like this!

When the henna paste is removed on natural henna it is orange, over
the next 48 hours it will usually darken. I'm not sure how long after
your attempt you posted this.

Did you use mehndi henna or hair henna? Hair henna, if it is pure
henna and bright green, will stain, but not as well as FRESH henna.
Henna should be sifted, this will get rid of the grit. I use some
cotton gauze (left over from making a shirt), a cottage cheese
container (24 oz), and a few marbles. I drape the fabric over the top
and push it in a bit. A rubber band will help to hold it in place.
Next, put in the marbles and henna. Put the top on, making sure it is
tight-the fabric makes this a little tricky sometimes. Then just shake
it gently from side to side. After a few minutes it should be done.
the sifted powder will allow you make a thicker paste. about as thick
as toothpaste is good to start with.

The time the paste is on, what is put in it, how thickly it is applied
and where it is applied is more important than how thick the paste is
mixed, although it can also be a factor.

Catherine's site has many good recipes and more useful info than I
think you can find anywhere else-see her reply. Also Kenzi's site is
very helpful-www.kenzi.com. Her henna powder is primo if you happen to
get hooked on this art form-like the rest of us!

Hope this was helpful!
