Re: Black "henna" BS is taking over NYPosted by Maureen on September 5, 2001 at 05:09:39: In reply to: Black "henna" BS is taking over NY posted by Kenzi on September 5, 2001 at 02:35:14: Well, actually Black "henna" folks seem to be out numbering naturalhenna artist at the fairs, vending the crap on the streets and around here as an additional service in the tattoo parlors. I find people's eyes glassing over when telling them the difference between 100% pure henna and the stuff with dye and any other additives. Basically, there are so many people who knw nothing at all about henna and their first and most visible encounter with any notion of henna is with the black crap. It is really too bad that the New York henna gathering is taking place in the winter time. It would be just wonderful to have a group of 20 to 30 henna artists all henned up going to that street with the 4 street vendors and carry "Don't be Touched By the Black Death!!" signs and saturate the street, people on the street with flyers about the dangers of the black crap...and ask to leave signs to be put in the store windows of any establishment that gives a damn. Sometimes a bit of confrontation can be helpful. You don't have to confront an individual, confront the issue. If any news media wants to know the difference between the natural henna and black henna, invite them to be there. Maybe they will interview the black death slingers and a natural henna artist to hear the opposing points of view. Minimally, it will be clear that they are not the same and that there is a safe alternative to the crap and a very outspoken and organized group of people determined to stop people from being injured by the black crap. I would love to be a part of this. It might take a parade permit and/or vendors permit for the day. But...whatever it takes. Of course, I don't know how this would play followed by a news story that the FDA does not approve of either? Just think that the picture captured by the news of a group of beautifully decorated people protesting "black death" and educating about and advocating for the use of safe natural henna might be worth a thousand letters. Or might at least be a nice accompanying picture to a letter about the difference. Maureen
