Hi Graeme,

I am on the run but wanted to add my thoughts to this. In testing
the henna powders that I have on hand and comparing the stains to
others who have posted picture results with the same powder...AND,
comparing stains on my skin and the stain or others I use the exact
same paste on within just a couple of minutes difference in time of
application, I am totally convinced that the individual body
chemistry interacts with the chemistry of the henna paste and makes
it quite difficult..if not impossible to to come up with a recipe
that will have 100% totally generalizable results. Plus there are
factors that would be very difficult to measure like the body
temperature of each individual and how that impacts results. I know
that my body temperature is always lower than 98.6 unless I have a
temperature. My extremities are always the coldest part of my body.
So the wrapping is a very important part of the process for
me...including having a scarf on my head to keep in the body heat.
Truly!! I believe that there are ideal conditions that each
individual henna likes more than others. But finding that ideal
condition is going to take one heck of a computer program to sort
through.

It is interesting to me that some people find paste they made have
quick demise if not refrigerated. Refrigeration or the lack of it
does not seem to impact my paste. I am not through testing this out
though. But I am thinking that because the room I keep the paste in
benefits greatly from the uneven central air conditioning in my
house, the paste is kept cool enough there to maintain its strength.
I wonder how many people it would take to control for all of the
variables...how one would be able to determine all of the variables
to be controlled for...and who has the computer program and the
skills to sort this all out. Of course, if that ever happened, I
would probably move on to another art form cause then henna will have
become too much like science for me. I love how predictably
unpredictable henna is...funny fuzzy fickled henna!

Maureen
