Re: Since when does violence end violence?Posted by Sarah B. on September 19, 2001 at 07:06:13: In reply to: Re: sad news of hate but amazing in a way posted by KIM on September 19, 2001 at 05:59:19: What was a major cause of World War II? World War I of course. Hitlerrose out of the ashes of the Germany that was crushed in World War I to unite the Germanic people against a power that had pillaged them. Though he may have had the best intentions, and if you look at it from a different standpoint, he did good for his country (got the economy out of a rut, made a rather poingient display of his power, UNITED his country, etc) but what good came of what he did? No good, more violence, more death. That is simply my point. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my words. By no means do I think we should just turn a cheek to what happened, but I do believe that we should take GREAT care with who our retaliation is aimed at. Too many people are running around this country saying "why don't we just nuke he** out of Afghanistan and have this over and done with" First of all as someone already mentioned, the Taliban is NOT the government of choice over there. Many Afghanistans hate Bin Ladin as much as your blue blooded Americans these days. They have been cheated, stolen from, deprived, and essentially raped as a people by the man and the Taliban as well. I am simply saying that a show of strenght and of might is not the right course of action. Taking my point about what people are saying ("nuke em off the planet") I wonder how many people realize that if one Nuke is detonated, another will follow it. We are not the only ones with this technology now!!! When we dropped the bombs on Japan we were the only ones with that power. Now half the world has the tecnhology. One explodes, there will be more. The human race will obliterate itself to what cause? I do not condone an outright attack on Afganistan, but by no means do I think we should turn blindly away. Simpler solutions can be found. Root out those responsible and make them pay, however I can find it in my heart to forgive them and to even feel sorry for those who gave their lives for something so petty and disgraceful. It is wrong to hate for any reason. Hate is an evil, disgusting, appalling thing that drives us to blindly destroy our fellow humans. I sit and I think after going to Renaissance festivals. While swordplay may seem infantile in so far as weaponry goes, my belief is that out of all types of combat and warfare it is by fare the most noble. When you're on the ground fighting a person with a sword, you have to look that other person in the eyes. To see that he is a person and not a political ideal or name or even a faceless country. He is a man, perhaps a father, a son, a brother, a husband. In swordplay you have to acknowledge that your opponent is human and is essentially just like you. If you walk away leaving him alive you're the better man for it. However these days we can stick an impersonal label like "Taliban" "Bin Laden" "Aiding and Abetting" and such on hundreds of people, fire missles at them and wipe them out without ever having seen their faces, or even the shape of their sihlouette on the horizon. If you ask me its sad. Flame me if you like, but war only makes more war. Hate only breeds more hate, and narrow-mindedness breeds those who would have both death and hatred. Sarah B.
