You can really use anything sticky and strong to seal down your
henna. The acid is not what helps the stain as much as the sealing of
the henna onto your skin. So even sugar water would have worked. I
like to use plain tap water with a little orange blossom water to
make it smell nice, and of course lots of sugar. And i actually have
used grapefruit juice too. It works quite nicely.
Some people like to use a product called NewSkin, which is originally
maid to be a paint on liquid bandage for small cuts. I wouldn't
recomend using it for it's perscribed use though, it stings cuts like
a #$%@&*! It works really well to nail down henna, if you just paint
on a light layer or 2.
And other people have some home made concoctions... See Alissa's
recipe for Glitter Goop below.
Hope that helps in the future so you don't have to run all over
creation!
Happy hennaing, and welcome to the board!

: Hi everyone,
: I'm new to this message board, and not nearly as experienced as
some
: of you, however, I've found a helpful trick for a fixative. I was
at
: my boyfriends house and had brought my henna supplies with me, and
: realized that I forgot to make some lemon juice fixative. I went
to
: a nearby Cumberland Farms to see if they had any of the bottled
: stuff, but they didn't. So, I bought a bottle of plain grapefruit
: juice from concentrate. When I got back to the house, I poured
about
: 1/2 of it in a small sauce pan and added some sugar (I didn't
measure
: how much, but it was quite a bit), then I reduced it to about 1/2
of
: what I originally put in the pan. Once it had cooled a little, I
: bottled it up and used it like you would use the lemon juice
: fixative. I can honestly say that it worked great, as my design is
: developing as it normally would and is nice and dark now. Just
: thought I'd share that with you all.
