I don't have much use for spinning in the grease. Feh.
I used to buy 3 heavy Romney or suchlike fleeces a year, scour them
and just spin from the teased locks. I rarely card because I like the
texture I get from teased locks better. I card only if I've gotten a
sub par fleece.

It's been a while. I spun and knitted a few fleeces every year
between about 1970 and 1996. I have a glorious fleece from a black
alpaca that I haven't gotten finished .... just plain been doing other
things.

The strangest job I did was for a couple in Nebraska who owned a pet
Bactrian camel. I was flat broke, and willing to do anything, so I
agreed to spin and knit them a pair of sweaters of the fleece from the
camel. They sent the fleece .... 3 HUGE boxes of it ... and dear god
did it ever smell like a camel! I rinsed, rinsed, rinsed, rinsed and
picked out everything the camel had ever sat in or leaned up against
... carded, carded, spun, spun, knitted, knitted the rank stuff ....
and did finally bring forth a pair of lovely camel hair sweaters. I
NEVER want to be that broke and desparate again!

BTW ... I've tried the Louet double treadle ... but the Ashford
Elizabeth, double drive, is my all time fav. I just LOVE it! I
taught my (then) 6 year old son to spin during an Iowa blizzard. He
spun at many craft fairs when he was little ... delighted the crowd
and collected pocketfulls of money.
