More info on what I foundPosted by Lauren on November 5, 2001 at 15:00:54: In reply to: Wear 2 pairs of glasses, and take a magnifying glass with you. posted by Catherine Cartwright Jones on November 5, 2001 at 04:13:46: an astrological sketch showing two women: : That's a GOOD one! Glad you found it! I think it's a significant : question just WHAT constellation that is! I've not been able to : identify it ... they seem to be warrior women to me, but I can't : verify that. My book doesn't say, either. : BTW ... the originals are freeking MICROSCOPIC. The only disadvantage : you have in the prints are the teeny dots, and not being able to make : a judgement call about what's a smudge and what's a henna pattern. : I'm using The Alhambra by Desmond Stewart, which has about a 5x7 pic of this one. All the other stars are labeled with an arabic character so the stuff on the hands is most likely not stars. There are ten dots in two different designs on each upraised palm. Have you seen the Indian one I'm talking about? It's in India, Art and Culture 1300-1900 by Stuart Cary Welch, page 158. Every other pic in the whole friggin book is dated, but of course not the one I really need. The label says: Tamarusa and Shapur at the Island of Nigar, from a manuscript of the Darab-nama (The History of Darab) of Abu Tahir (folio 34r) by Basawan. Everything else in that section is 1570-90, and the details of the painting seem consistent with that dating. There's one woman in the picture and she has no finger or palm henna, just this pattern in black down both feet. If other people could look at this, I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether it's a pattern or not.
