: Why is it that some hair hennaes ask for water not lemon juice? Is
it
You can get dye release with warm water ... it's just far less
efficient than an acid. For skin you need to max out the little
Lawsones. For hair .... perhaps less than gonzo burgundy suits some
people.

: How does hair "henna" claim to be black? This is due to additives
: also, even if advertised as being "all-natural"?

Henna was such a ubiquitous hair colorant in the 19th century that
"henna" became almost a generic term for hair stain. Indigo has been
used with henna to stain hair black, possibly from Babylonian times.
In the 19th century, when indigo mixes were imported for hair, they
were termed "black henna". The name stuck. There are still hair
products with henna and or indigo available that will make hair
raven's wing blue/black. It's all natural and as far as I'm aware, the
indigos are harmless. The indigo/black henna labeling confuses people,
and that's a shame.

I'd actually like to know more about how indigo is used... never had
much success with it myself.
