How to get large patches even?

I usually do linear designs but over the weekend I decided to try
something where the fingertips are partially filled in. I am
reminded why I stopped doing large patches to begin with- it's all
splotchy and uneven, which is worse as the color is so gorgeously
dark. Darn for the loss of my digital camera cable, I'd like to post
the pic here! Anyway, any advice?
