The white stuff or "kapur" (Malay)Posted by Jewel on June 21, 2001 at 15:45:16: In reply to: Quicklime posted by Catherine Cartwright Jones on June 21, 2001 at 14:39:30: :: The white stuff people dip betel leaves into. : - hmmmmm .... now that you mentioned this ... my late grandma used to chew on betel leaves in her free time. She'd break off a tiny bit of catechu and fold it inside the leaves, smear just a tiny dab of the "white stuff" (it's a paste), fold the leaves up neatly and chew on it (traditionally, the host would offer betel leaves to his/her guests as a treat). Grandma would get her lips and teeth all red. Occasionally she'd spit (all red of course) into her antique spittoon. The white stuff is known as "kapur" (that's Malay). I asked mom why grandma added that to her betel leaves and she told me that the catechu and "kapur" will make it redder. As a child, I called it "bird crap" *grins*. Mom still keep a can of those. She said that she'd use some of it to make some traditional Malay cakes and sweets. I think I can dig out some to add to my henna paste. Do you add it in as normal ? How much shall I add in ? Love & peace, ~Jewel~
