My recipe is: 1tbl henna, 2 tsp lemon juice, 1/2 tsp sugar, some tea to get the right texture, and 1 tsp tea tree oil (I've been using Dessert Essence, which might not be the best quality, but it's cheap and I had it on hand) and 1/2 tsp marjoram oil. With Jamila and CA henna, I recommend making a crumbly paste of henna and lemon juice and then letting that sit overnight. Then mix in the rest of the ingredients. With Kenzi's henna, you don't need the overnight rest -- just mix. Once thoroughly mixed, I let the pastes sit for a couple of days. (I do finger test daily, though, just to be sure -- a finger test is putting a bit of henna on a finger and waiting 10 min to see if it does anything at all. If it leaves a bright orange stain, then it's working. This is a trick that Kree taught me.) There are so many variables with henna -- freshness, release of henna- noogly time which seems to be different for different crops of henna, freshness of the essential oils, even the pH of your water can affect things! Don't give up! And best of luck with your next batch.
