Gosh, this all really frightens me (plus a rant)Posted by Rupal on August 20, 2001 at 16:50:46: In reply to: Black Henna Problem...yikes posted by Joanna V. on August 20, 2001 at 16:10:11: I'm really sorry about your black henna stain. It's reallyunfortunate that people still consciously choose to apply black henna to an unknowing public. We artists really need to put out the word that black henna is dangerous and quite harmful. Until yesterday, I hadn't done a fair in a really long time, and I didn't realize how many people want black henna and don't understand the limitations of natural henna stains. Especially with recent scientific studies slamming PPD, (I'd like to read Professor Hausen's scientific paper on black henna) it's going to be really important to ensure that every potential customer is informed of the essentials. I've just updated the main page of my website with a "don't use black henna" warning, and I think I'll be going through my artists' listings and checking what type of henna these artists use. As much as I respect people who legitimately use non-PPD'ed colored henna these days, I still can't help but shrink away from it. I feel that it's deceiving to use "henna tattoo" to name anything that isn't "red" henna, and we artists so often take for granted that the public is informed. At least I do. I can only imagine that if a person sees safe "black henna" somewhere, they'll think that all black henna is safe. I really get so surprised every time I have to discuss the henna process, in detail, to a customer. This invariably happens at fairs, because my Internet-based customers are always very well informed about henna; henna has always been such a second-nature art to me that I just assume that everybody has heard of it before! ~Rupal
