Medium stain + re-applied henna = LIGHTER stain?!

I'm really frustrated by this... I tried to do a fresh overlay of
henna part of a design that didn't turn out as dark as the rest. I
left it on just as long as I had the first time, figuring a little
darker would be less noticeable than a little lighter. When I took off
the paste, the spot I had hennaed was even lighter than it had been
before. Now the rest of the design was a mahogany color except for a
milk-chocolate patch! Has anyone else seen this phenomenon? Got any
ideas on how to correct it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
