This is a tricky question!

You can steam for a long-lasting dark stain. With the simple lemon
juice paste, you can get a deep penetration, then with steam and heat,
you can oxidize it to dark. Many people find that too much bother,
unless it's mid winter, and the teakettle is your friend.

The terpines are certainly reacting with the henna while in the carrot
bag, and are doing something to the henna that makes it penetrate only
half as deep! The demise on my last caj was very odd... the
fingertips, on the last day, were still BLACK, but you could see pink
skin underneath as the upper layer exfoliated unevenly. Imagine paint
pealing off a wall. That's what it looked like! Overall, the terped
pastes fade on my hand looking much like an old sepia ink drawing
that's fading.

We saw many patterns demise within a week on tummies, legs ... body
parts of people going swimming. My impression is that people were very
happy to have their henna only there for their week of vacation! We
did all sorts of body parts, some the boss would see, some that he
wouldn't.

I think the important thing here is CHOICE.
You can split up your mix and use it a number of ways, with different
fragrances, different moods. The info is in YOUR hands now!
