I was wondering if anyone had had luck finding larger copies of a
painting to look at details. I went through I don't know how many
books today lookiing for (expletive deleted) henna pictures. I found
a scant ten out of thousands of pages, two of which are really
guesses. I have lots of pictures of finger dips and palm painting,
which are easy enough to come by. So far i have found only three
pics of an actual design- an astrological sketch showing two women or
peris, I'm not sure which, with different arrangements of dots on
their palms, a woman with dipped fingers up to the palm joint with
dots in a line pattern above that, and (the one I've GOT to see a
bigger pic of) a period Indian woman with what appear to be designs
going down the top of each foot. It's too small to make out whether
it's a shoe top, but it would be a strange shoe top if it were. I'm
intrigued. Is there a reference book which has locations of various
art works? I've just got to see this one better. Her hands are not
hennaed so far as I can see.
I'm very disappointed that I haven't found any other designs. It
seems that Indian stuff was still primarily dips even into the
1800s. When did the lacework start? I found no pictures other than
very modern ones of Indian women with any sort of pattern.
I'm surprised i haven't found more Turkish stuff. I have quite a few
books of turkish art and found just a couple people, both of which
seem to have hennaed nails only or up to the first knuckle, which is
at odds with what I expected. I still have a couple more books to go
through (different libraries) so I hope to have more Persian stuff
tomorrow, but for now I'm frustrated and intrigued in approximately
equal parts. Damn. Yay. Ugh. Will report more tomorrow.
